This offering brings together two LPs from two very different eras. The first is a "HI-Fi" issue from 1954
(RCA - originally recorded by EMI); the second, a digitally recorded LP released in 1982. What they have in common is
that both feature outstanding programs of Italian orchestral music - and extremely well performed.



"The 'Collegium Musicum Italicum' was founded in 1947 by Renato Fasano ... for the purpose of disseminating rare
but important works of music. The Collegium in turn set up the Virtuosi di Roma..."  And, as this recording
reveals, the ensemble fully lived up to its name. Perhaps the gem of this LP is the performance of Clementi's Symphony
in D - a "rediscovered" work whose restoration was finished by Alfredo Casella not quite 20 years before this
recording was made (previous to this time, Clementi's symphonies were assumed to be lost).



The Rossini / Cherubini program from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under Gerard Schwarz is satisfying in all
respects - and it would be difficult to find a recording which does more justice to Cherubini's 1815 Sinfonia in D
(Cherubini's later String Quartet No. 2 in C major being an 1829 arrangement of this work).



LP restoration of material issued 1954 (RCA / EMI); transfer of digitally recorded LP from 1982 (Nonesuch).  



Both LPs are accompanied by extensive program notes, all of which are included along with the covers.

On a personal note: I grew up listening to a lending-library copy of the RCA / EMI LP - and I have yet to outgrow my
fondness for it. In addition, it's the only LP I've ever encountered which comes with a "genuine art print" -
which one can either view through the little window on the cassette cover - or frame and hang on the wall. The print is
a reproduction of a painting by Carlo Crivelli (c.1430-1495). Crivelli, as the notes relate, worked in Ascoli where he
"...remained aloof from the general artistic development of his time. While other artists were experimenting with
the new medium of oil [actually, already known in ancient Rome] Crivelli continued to paint in tempera. Crivelli's use
of this medium has never been surpassed." While this last assertion may be debatable from differing art historical
perspectives, the nonconformist Crivelli has long seemed to me "a painter after my own painter's heart."
Naturally, a scan of the print of Crivelli's Madonna and Child is included in this upload. One may (or may not) want to
frame it; but hopefully it conveys some small idea of a very remarkable painting.
